The 3 Most Common Eating Disorders

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), about 9% of the U.S. population, equivalent to 28.8 million people, will experience an eating disorder at some point in their lives. Below, we highlight three of the most prevalent eating disorders.

1. Anorexia Nervosa

Commonly known as "anorexia," anorexia nervosa is characterized by a distorted perception of weight and a relentless fear of gaining it. Individuals suffering from this disorder often severely restrict their food intake, leading to self-starvation. Many may also engage in excessive exercise as a means of controlling their weight.

2. Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa involves consuming large quantities of food in a short period, followed by attempts to eliminate the excess calories through unhealthy methods such as vomiting, laxative abuse, or enemas. This unhealthy cycle is known as "binging and purging."

3. Binge-Eating Disorder

Binge-eating disorder is marked by frequent episodes of consuming unusually large amounts of food. Individuals with this disorder often describe a sense of losing control and an inability to stop eating, which can lead to feelings of distress and shame.
